What is an Energy Efficiency Report?

An Energy Efficiency Report evaluates how a building performs in relation to energy consumption and thermal comfort. The report confirms that the building design meets the energy efficiency provisions of the National Construction Code (NCC).

Energy assessors analyse several aspects of the design, including:

  • Building orientation

  • Insulation levels

  • Window size and glazing type

  • Shading and ventilation

  • Building materials and thermal mass

Energy assessments are usually completed during the design stage, helping ensure the building will comply with NCC energy requirements before construction begins.

Residential Energy Efficiency Reports

Residential energy efficiency reports assess the thermal performance of houses and residential developments.

These reports are required for building approval in Queensland and Victoria and demonstrate compliance with the National Construction Code energy efficiency standards.

Our assessors work with builders, architects and homeowners to ensure residential projects achieve the required NCC energy rating.

Commercial Energy Efficiency Reports

Commercial developments must also meet the energy efficiency provisions of the National Construction Code.

OnCert works with architects, developers and construction professionals to complete energy efficiency assessments for commercial buildings and confirm compliance with NCC performance requirements.

methods of energy efficiency assessment

Energy efficiency reports may be completed using several recognised assessment methods depending on the building type and location.

Deemed to Satisfy (DTS)

DTS assesses building design against a set of minimum NCC energy performance requirements including insulation levels, glazing specifications and shading provisions.

NatHERS

NatHERS modelling provides a detailed thermal simulation of the building design using accredited software. The result is a star rating that represents the home’s energy performance.

BASIX

BASIX assessments apply to residential development in New South Wales, evaluating water efficiency, thermal performance and energy usage.

BESS Statements

The Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard (BESS) is used in Victoria to assess sustainability performance in residential developments.

Energy Report FAQs

  • An Energy Efficiency Report assesses the thermal performance of a building to ensure it meets the energy efficiency requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC). The report evaluates elements such as insulation, glazing, building orientation and materials.

  • Energy Efficiency Reports are typically required for new homes, major renovations and extensions as part of the building approval process in Queensland and Victoria.

  • Energy Efficiency Reports must be prepared by a qualified energy assessor (ie. OnCert) using accredited assessment methods such as NatHERS modelling or Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) calculations.

  • Most Energy Efficiency Reports can be completed within 1–3 business days, depending on the complexity of the building design.
